Leadership Coaching vs. Executive Coaching

What’s the difference between leadership coaching and executive coaching?
Since I get this question often, here we go!

Leadership Coaching
Leadership coaching is for people managing teams, leading projects, or stepping into bigger roles. It’s about getting better at things like communication, decision-making, and actually leading, not just managing tasks. It can be done internally (with someone in HR or L&D) or externally, with a coach who brings a fresh lens.

Executive Coaching
Executive coaching is a partnership with CEOs, founders, and executive teams, with a focus on strategy, vision, complex decisions, and all the human dynamics that come with them. That’s why most executive coaching is external: it creates a space where leaders can speak freely, reflect honestly, and stretch their thinking. Most importantly, there’s an opportunity in this work for the executive to explore perspectives, hear observations, and receive feedback from the coach that most of the people who work with them won’t share.

Still not sure what kind of coaching you need—for yourself, your team, or your company?
